Sleeping too much is bad for your health, it increases your risk of depression, dementia, Kidney and liver diseases, diabetes, stroke, heart conditions and even death. The amount of sleep you need depends on your age, activities and lifestyle. However, it is recommended that an adult gets 7-9 hours of sleep every day for optimum performance and overall wellbeing. For adults, sleeping too much is when you sleep for more than 9 hours in 24 hours.
Some people who sleep 10-12hours and more per night to feel refreshed suffer from hypersomnia. This condition is triggered when you do not get enough sleep regularly. Your body tries to make up for sleep lost by oversleeping.
Sleeping is good and helps you perform optimally but too much sleep or long sleeping is bad.

Sleeping too much is a common trigger for headaches. According to scientific research, oversleeping has an effect on the neurotransmitters in your brain, specifically serotonin. Serotonin signals our body to wake up and to fall asleep. Unfortunately, long sleeping can disrupt your sleep cycle. People who sleep in at weekends, vacations, and day or at nighttime suffer headaches because of this. If you frequently suffer headaches you should check for a lack of sleep or too much sleep.
Oversleeping induces a sense of fatigue. When you sleep too much, your energy level will be low and you might find yourself dragging the next day and too unmotivated to work. Therefore, do not be surprised if you feel less refreshed and energized after sleeping longer than usual. Again, if you experience excessive daytime tiredness or fatigue, it might just be that you’ve been snoozing too much.

A study shows that people who sleep longer than 8 hours can experience depression more than people who sleep 8 hours or fewer. However, oversleeping can be a sign of depression, yet in other cases sleeping too much could lead to depression. This sometimes makes you stay in bed to sleep more. Excessive daytime sleepiness
Prolonged sleeping oftentimes results in excessive daytime sleepiness or napping. Rather than a renewed energy, you feel fatigued and drowsy all day if you wake up later than usual. Hence, you will doze off on a task and even take a prolonged nap at intervals due to low energy.
