COUPLES SLEEPING GUIDE: WHO SHOULD SLEEP ON WHICH SIDE OF THE BED?

Research shows that sleeping as a couple is good for you physically, emotionally, and psychologically. It comes with many health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure, and strengthening the immune system. It also cultivates warmth, a sense of closeness and intimacy, a stronger bond, and reduces stress. But as much as it comes with these benefits, it also comes with its issues too. Sharing a bed with someone has its pros and cons and it isn’t always easy. For some people, sleeping with their partner is not something they look forward to. Although some relationships might be perfect in other ways, when it comes to sharing a bed, they often find it frustrating. Sleeping as a couple tends to come with different sleeping challenges such as snoring, disagreements on temperature, bedtime routine, and then to crown it all, arguments on who to sleep on which side of the bed. This is one of the major bedtime arguments couples tend to have.

Almost everybody has a side of the bed they sleep on, and most couples need to establish this as soon as they decide to start sleeping together. Research shows that men often tend to sleep on the right as it makes them feel dominant while women prefer the left as it makes them feel safe. There are also claims that people who sleep on the left side of the bed wake up in a good mood, and people who sleep on the right side of the bed wake up grumpy. Everyone has their preference when it comes to sleeping and some find it difficult to sleep when they are not on their preferred side of the bed.

There are different reasons why people choose to sleep on a particular side of the bed and they include the following:

1. CLAUSTROPHOBIA: Claustrophobic people find it hard to stay in enclosed spaces so they will most likely want to face away from the wall while sleeping.

2. TEMPERATURE PREFERENCE: Some people might like to stay on a particular side of the room that isn’t too cold or warm.

3. ENTERTAINMENT: A particular side of the bed may have a better view of the tv or may have a better bedside table for lamps or books.

4. NOISE: One side of the bed might be less noisy than the other side. And this might be more suitable for a partner that can’t sleep with noise.

5. CONVENIENCE: One partner might need to wake up earlier than the other, so they might prefer to sleep on the side of the bed that’s closer to the door. Or if one partner tends to use the bathroom regularly at night, they might want to sleep at the side of the bed that’s closer to the bathroom door.

6. PROTECTIVENESS: Most men like to sleep at the side of the bed that is closer to the door as a way of protecting their partner. In case of a home invasion or any other danger.

7. FAMILIARITY: A partner might just be so used to sleeping on a particular side of the bed and might find difficulty sleeping if they change sides. Not every decision to sleep on a particular side of the bed is conscious or practical, sometimes it has a lot to do with your psychological makeup.

So what happens when you both like the same side of the bed? This is where compromise comes into play. You have to try as much as possible to put your partner’s well-being into consideration to help them sleep better.  But if neither partner is willing to compromise, sleeping on separate beds might be best. Sleep is very crucial to our overall health and wellness so if you feel sleeping on a different bed will help you sleep better, why not? Not all couples enjoy sleeping together, and that’s fine. The bottom line is, you and your partner deserve quality sleep in order to preserve your physical and mental health and no one has to sacrifice their sleep for the other. At the end of the day, it’s the bed that counts. Whether you choose to sleep together or separately, a good mattress is what equals good sleep.
