Choosing a Mattress
Since we spend one-third of our lives in bed, it is important we commit some time
to making the best choice for the type of mattress we sleep on. If you are purchasing
your mattress for long-term use (which should always be the case), then you really
want to be careful because you might have to live with the decisions you make.
A good decision will depend on what you are looking for in your mattress and
a good mattress will help you sleep well at night. A good sleep will leave you
more active and generally prolong your life because some health issues such as
depression, high blood pressure and heart disease have been linked to poor sleep.
If you have trouble sleeping at night, wake up often, or wake up sore from
tossing and turning then you should be thinking of purchasing a new mattress.
Here are some tips to consider in choosing a mattress
- Support – Firm mattress will conform to the natural curves of your body
providing the proper support at all locations. It is very important to maintain
the profile of the body, especially the double “s” shape of the spine, so as to
secure a healthy back and body as a whole. In general, firm mattresses are
recommended for stomach and some back sleepers, soft mattresses are recommended
for side sleepers, and medium mattresses are recommended for the majority of back sleepers
- Absence of Pressure on Joint – A good mattress will take pressure off the
joints and sore spots allowing for a painless night of sleep. The orthopaedic
mattress for instance provides good support for the back and it does so by
supporting the spine in its correct alignment and by avoiding the development
of pressure points. This in turn means that an orthopaedic is comfortable,
restful and supportive and this leads to a good night’s sleep.
- Budget – If you are shopping on a tight budget, there are cheap mattresses
that will give you considerable support but it is advisable to look at the health
and economic benefit, that is, spend a little more on quality and save yourself
stress and money in looking for another mattress after a short while. Spend a
little more on comfort and quality and live a healthier life
- Size – Size of your mattress matters under certain conditions,
e.g. size of bed, size of room and number of people sharing. If your
room is small you might want to consider a small mattress to match
the room size and if the mattress will be shared then you will also
have to consider the size depending on number of people sharing. Go to
“know your mattress size” for more information.
