The Effect of Sleep on the Immune System

effect of sleep

Many people are caught up in the circle of daily activities that they forget the importance of  quality sleep. Regrettably, they suffer from one or more sicknesses caused by a weak immune system.  This is because having quality sleep helps boost the immune system which fights bacteria’s and viruses that attacks your body. For instance, research has shown that people with a strong immune system will survive the Covid-19 pandemic than others. Getting sufficient hours of sleep will boost the body’s response to vaccines.  Apparently, your immune system is your body’s defense mechanism against virus and sickness.

Here are some of the effects of sleep on the immune system.

  • Increase vulnerability to diseases and illnesses

    Weak Immune system

Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. Sleep deprivation may decrease production of protective cytokines, infection-fighting antibodies and cells, that helps combat the penetration and spread of diseases in your body. So,  your body needs enough sleep to fight infectious diseases. Also Read: How your Body Suffers when you don’t get Enough Sleep

  • Slow Recovery Processes

Not only will sleep deficiency increase your risk and exposure to diseases, it will also affect the recovery process. During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called Cytokines, some of which help promote sleep. It is important to note that this cytokine need to increase when you have an infection or inflammation, or when you’re under stress.

  • Early Death

Early Death as a result of lack of sleep on the immune system

Death is indeed an inevitable end but no one deserves to die early. However, sleep deprivation can destroy the body’s defense mechanism and expose the body to diseases that can lead to early death. To stay healthy, you need to always get quality sleep,   eat right, exercise.

Getting quality sleep should be a priority for you. This will save you the stress, money and time you’d need to get out of sickness. You have to be deliberate, design a sleep schedule if you don not have one and ensure you stick to it.
